Timed assessment look 1 - Emma's Design

Peer assessment- 

Me and Emma both met up before are timed assessments to discuss each other’s ideas and looks and go over what we would both be doing. We also discussed how we would print some images out of our looks and give each other’s notes on the day along with our own kits so we could create each other’s looks easier with the right tools and equipment. With my look for Emma we discussed how Emma was not as confident in finger waving so I changed my design for my hair idea. We also discussed going in earlier for me to start her look and prep her hair earlier as I was doing finger waving for her look.

Advise for designer- Emma

Emma designed and practised her make-up look so that she knew what she was doing and could show me pictures of this before the timed assessment. Emma’s make-up ideas were good and she had good images to show me and instructions and knew what she wanted. What could have improved in Emma’s design was the use of accessories and also knowing more how she wanted the hair to be styled as she was still a little unsure of her idea. The make-up needed something more to compliment it such as a hat or some kind of accessory also but overall it was a good design and quite straight forward to do.

Self-reflection as make-up artist

I have learnt that I need to be more confident as a make-up artist and hair designer and just do what I think instead of worrying so much as this sometimes puts me off and distracts me from what I should be doing and causing me to make mistakes. I have learnt that I can do things if I put my mind to it and am relaxed and confident and have practised. With Emma’s look before the timed assessment I had to practise the look on myself just to make me feel better about what I would be doing in the timed assessment. My weakness are that I always feel unconfident in what iam doing when I shouldn’t and that I worry too much and can overthink what I am doing as long as I practise a look or design and am prepared I can achieve it.

I came across these images of Leland Bobbe's work on pintrest I found them really intriguing and clever. I had an idea similar to this in mind but not using drag, I wanted to show someone almost like two people and two personalities but using age as a concept using half a face with natural make up and half with the made up version of the person almost like the other them.

The sisters of perpetual indulgence
It’s easy to make assumptions about a group of people based on their appearance, but what happens when you actually get to know them? In 2007 local photographer Matthew Black first caught a glimpse of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in Seattle. After many months of building a trusting relationship with the Sisters, he discovered that there is more than meets the eye.

I really like these images and the meanings behind them I like how there is a picture of them as a normal person and also them as a character dressed up and how the images have been placed next to each other so you can see the difference. I think this is a great idea for an image to show the change in someone from themselves to another person and show how easily the identity is changed by adding different hair, make-up and accessories.

 Size plays a massive role in the fashion industry and is a big issue with many woman and men around the world because of what we see in fashion magazines, catwalks and how we are conceived to try and look like. Its wrong to say one size is the ideal size as people are all different shapes sizes and heights as long as your are fit and healthy this is what we should be seeing fit and healthy men and woman of all different sizes shapes heights and ages.

Catwalk models
Is this what people today should be looking up to? Not all models we see on the catwalks are as skinny as these pictures but all catwalk models are very very thin some more naturally than others and I don't think that this is right that fashion clothing should only be presented on small models clothes are for every shape and size not just skinny people and should be shown on fit and healthy models of different sizes and shapes. I know there are a lot of people out there that agree with this but still we are not seeing a huge change in shapes sizes and ages on the catwalk and models are made to all look the same.

I wanted to look at older models for this project as in fashion magazines and everyday life we rarely see an older model brace our catwalks or modelling in magazines. Older models show a huge range of diversity and you should be proud about growing older just because you are becoming older doesn't mean you have to dress and act the way society tell you. Older people should be able to dress stylishly in bright colours if they want and should be able to wear bright coloured make up and not have to stick to nude colours that most people would preferably put someone older in.

Finger waving

In our practical lesson we done finger waving as this was a very popular style and look within the 1920's era especially in cabaret. This took me a while and I found it quite hard to do but I really like the end results of finger waving as it looks really nice. As an end result my finger waving did not turn out to well as it had not dried properly before I took it out, I think that finger waving is a great style that could potentially be used in one of my final looks.

Is that a beard?

I created stubble and a beard in my special effects lesson but I wanted to incorporate it into this project also as the thought of a woman having stubble or a beard is very unlikely in our everyday life and is a very diverse look. I also added lipstick to the look as this made it look even more weird as my model is very girlie looking with long blonde hair so this added to the effect.

Poses (2011) 

Below I have posted the piece of writing directly from Dominguez site as this explains exactly what poses is and how great of an idea it is and the meaning behind the  great idea.

"Poses" is a direct criticism of the absurd and artificial world of glamour and of fashion that magazines present, specifically, the highly-distorted image of women that they transmit through models that do not represent real women and promoting harmful parameters and attitudes for her.

These images of women (thrown, submissive, weak, sick...) are the most feminine reference in the mass media and they have a great influence in both men and women when building our roles in terms of behavior and ways of thinking.

Using these impossible stances of the fashion publishing, a group of real women transfer these poses to daily scenes: the queue of a museum, the supermarket or the bus stop, sparking off the reaction of the spectators (on the other hand, regular consumers of these images).

The aim: to make it clear how ridiculous, and at times harmful, it can be to follow these models that the world of glamour impose on us.

I really love these images and what they are about, I love the use of real everyday woman posing as if they are super models in everyday situations it shows that doing these poses shown and used in magazines in everyday situation looks ridiculous.

Image from a body shop campaign

I came across this image from a body shop campaign and I found what was written and what it was about really inspiring and that it had a great meaning towards the topic of diversity showcasing why some people are diverse and it shows what this project is about. I also liked the image because some people naturally think people get tattoos for a fashion statement which is more the case now, but also people get them as memories, stories on the body and to help make a bad time better such as a scar. I also liked it as for a final look I am thinking about the aspect of using tattoos and showing someone with tattoos that potentially has tattoos with meaning behind them etc.

Make up Continuity..

We done a practical lesson where we done our own contemporary interpretation of Anita Berbers image below where she is dressed all in red . Originally the dress Anita Berber was wearing for this portrait was black not actually red the painter just decided to paint her in a red dress. While doing this image we were looking at continuity documenting what we were doing using images and face charts so that this look could be reproduced. Below are pictures of the look I created for the contemporary interpretation of Anita Berber I used quite bright colours to create the look but they still had a darkness to them I also done a face chart that matched the look while writing all the products and how I created the look down.

Koobles models

French fashion brand Kooples is grabbing the attention of hipster types around the world with its "Couples" campaign. The name pretty much says it all - real life couples model Kooples clothing in a series of pictures and videos.

While discussing ideas in a lesson with my lecturer I was talking about possibly looking at taking pictures of diverse and individual people together almost like odd couples together and placing people together that are complete opposites to see how this looked and really show diversity together with different people. While discussing this idea my lecturer she mentioned the brand kooples and there campaigns, how they use people placed together who are quite different to each other but also have a similar look and how it works really well as a campaign and is different to other campaigns. While looking and thinking about this idea I decided that it would properly be quite hard to find different people men and woman to photograph together easily and decided to look into but not take the idea any further. 

Scratch wigs ...

Applying scratch wigs to the head.

I firstly started of by brushing the hair threw and then started to plait the hair into French plaits and wrap them around the head and grip them into place. I then plaited the front part of the hair also as my model had a fringe so it was shorter at the front I then gripped that plait back also. After plaiting the hair and pinning it into place I sprayed the hair with some hairspray to get the stray hairs down, then I applied a pair of tights to the head to keep the hair in place and also so the wig has something to sit on without irritating the models head. After doing this I gripped the hair at the sides to keep the tights in place on the head. Once this was done you can apply different wigs to the head getting your model to help you put this on by holding the front of the wig while you pull the back of it on to the head. Make sure you brush and style the wig before placing it on the head as this will be harder to do once placed on the head and could be uncomfortable. Also make sure no grips/pins are digging into your models head before you place the wig on properly as your model will be uncomfortable.
