Otto Dix

Anita Berber by Otto Dix. (pastel 1925)

Otto Dix, Portrait of Anita Berber (pastel, 1925)
Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix was a German painter and print maker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of Weimar society and the brutality of war. was famous for his unique and grotesque style. Although Hitler's Nazi regime destroyed many of Otto Dix's works, the majority of his paintings can still be seen in museums throughout Germany.
Otto Dix paintings have a caricature nature, but are also realistic and edgy. His paintings have energy and emotion which when looking at the paintings you can feel the atmosphere surrounding the model, place and time. I really like that I get this sense of emotional and movement capturing the era and nature of the surrounding time of Weimar Berlin. The way he actually paints his models is very bold and colourful with a lot of strong strokes and movements using a variety of materials. He uses bright colours that usually you wouldn't see on the face to the naked eye but are actually there underlying the skin. This to me makes the models seem as if they are purely made up characters not real people painted by Otto Dix.
